How to Make Matcha Green Tea Without a Whisk?

In this post, we’ll show you how to make a delicious cup of Matcha Green Tea — even if you don’t have a traditional whisk on hand.

Maybe you’ve just tried Matcha for the first time, or perhaps someone gifted you a tin or bag of bright green Matcha powder, and you’re not quite sure how to use it. If you’re not a regular Matcha drinker, the preparation process can seem a little intimidating at first — but don’t worry! It’s easier than it looks. Let’s take a closer look at how you can enjoy Matcha without needing any special tools.

The Traditional Way to Prepare Matcha

When you see photos or videos of Matcha being made, you’ll often notice a small bamboo whisk in the picture. This whisk, known as a chasen, is traditionally used to mix the Matcha powder with hot water until it becomes smooth and frothy.

If you’d like to learn more about the traditional method, you can check out one of our previous blog posts where we go into detail.

However, there’s no rule that says you must make Matcha the traditional way. In fact, we rarely use a bamboo whisk ourselves! So if you don’t have one at home, don’t let that stop you from enjoying a great cup of Matcha. Let’s explore some easy alternatives.

How to Make Matcha Without a Whisk

One of the simplest and most effective tools you can use instead of a whisk is something you might already have — a milk frother.

Using a Milk Frother

Here’s our quick and easy method for making Matcha using a milk frother:

  1. Pour about 1/5 of a cup of your favorite plant-based milk (we like oat milk) into your mug or bowl.

  2. Add ½ tablespoon of Matcha powder, or adjust to taste.

  3. Use your milk frother to mix the powder into the milk until smooth.

  4. Add hot water to fill the cup.

  5. Stir gently and enjoy!

This method saves time and gives you a beautifully smooth drink with minimal effort. We often use it during busy mornings. When we do have extra time — say on a relaxed weekend — we still love making Matcha the traditional way with a chasen and tea bowl. Other Ways to Mix Matcha Without a Whisk

If you don’t have a milk frother, you can also:

  • Use a blender or mixer — just blend the Matcha with your hot water or milk until smooth.

  • Shake it in a bottle or jar — add your Matcha and liquid, close the lid tightly, and shake well.

Keep in mind that these methods may sometimes leave a few small clumps of powder. A milk frother tends to work best for a smooth texture, and it’s super easy to clean — just rinse it with hot water afterward!
